Nobody spoke well of the Fanti as imperial subjects: and that included Fantis themselves. While the British lamented that ‘those damned Fantis’ were ungovernable, the Fantis unashamedly boasted of their recalcitrance, their rudeness, their contempt for the imperial set-up, and for the whiteman. Their language was crammed with proverbs and other sayings attesting to this.
